For the first time it was proposed to involve teachers of English working in Elementary Schools in an attempt to redesign English texts and to innovate appropriate teaching technique, Besides the actual working conditions in elementary schools, recent developments, in English Language Teaching (ELT) need to be taken into account in this great effort. Such a venture was undertaken by us in collaboration with NBT, NCERT and APSC in October 1991. An overwhelming response from teachers and a willing readiness from experts made this venture a success. A three- day workshop was conducted at S.B.O.A. Higher Secondary School, AnnaNagar, Madras from 25th to 27th October 1991. Teachers' enthusiastic participation and specialists' effective presentations were greatly appreciated by one and all.
